The Metzger Family siblings grew up at the house Grandpa built on 4 Division St in Mountaintop. And after Grandma died in 1983, Grandpa soon moved down to Florida, and the McCormick's moved into his house. But he would come back for every Christmas to spend it with us. And since he'd always stay in his house, the party was always held at the McCormick's. Depending on how many children each of his children had, that's how many gifts they would get to give to their nieces and nephews. And Grandpa always had a huge magical stocking that had various dollar bills in it. All of his grandchildren would line up and take turns picking from the stocking. Some would get lucky and pick a very large bill. And sometimes, if some got a smaller bill they would get to pick again. That was always our favorite part of the party. Later on, when Grandpa died we decided to modify some of the traditions. We thought it would be nice to take turns and have the Christmas Party at a different families' house each year. Which proved quite exciting because in 2002, we all got to go see what Christmas was like in Texas. Also by this time all the grandchildren were getting older and it seemed silly for the parents to be buying all the gifts and not getting any. So we decided to start drawing names from a hat, and have everyone in whole family exchange gifts, so each person would bring one and get one in return. This added a new element of fun to the party, getting to watch all the parents open gifts too. We would usually open the gifts from youngest to oldest. But once or twice we've gone oldest to youngest. Click here to send me your memories of the Metzger Family Christmas Tradition, or how it developed.
